Rain, after all is only rain; it is not bad weather. So also, pain is
only pain; unless we resist it, then it becomes torment. - I Ching

Pregnancy services: a full breakdown
In general:
At
our prenatal visits we will find out how you and your baby are doing.
We give you plenty of time to ask questions and to relay ideas or thoughts
about your pregnancy and birth. Appointments average 45-60 minutes
and wait times are usually 15 minutes or less. The visits are informal
and comfortable, done in Jeni's home office. Everyone is greeted with
a hug and smile and we urge you to make yourself comfortable with a
glass of water or cup of tea. We strongly encourage mothers and their
partners to attend prenatals together and encourage any children to
come along as well. This is a time to get to know who we are and find
a space where you feel truly at home, comfortable, and safe with your
midwife. We will always be available to you 24/7 with any
questions or concerns you might have. We are here to serve you.
The initial visit:
We like to see you as soon as you find out you are pregnant. We get you started with the right nutrition and any help you may need in your first trimester. This first visit takes about an hour and a half.
Until 36 Weeks:
We see you every four weeks until you are 28 weeks and every two weeks until you are 36 weeks. At these visits we will take your blood pressure and pulse, check how your baby is growing through measuring and palpation. After 10-11 weeks we can hear the baby's heart beat with a Doppler, at 18-22 with a fetoscope (which is just like a stethoscope). We will check your urine for a variety of things and see how you are gaining weight. We will also draw your blood and perform the necessary tests. We spend a significant amount of time on nutrition and counseling. We ask you questions about your diet and physical well-being. We make sure you and your baby are growing beautifully.
Childbirth Class:
All
first-time mothers are requested to take childbirth classes around
32-37 weeks. All mothers who will be having their first
homebirth are strongly encouraged to attend as well. You may take them
with us at $150 per couple for the series (usually done on two Saturdays)
or you may take them somewhere else especially if you desire a specific
modality such as Hypnobirthing or Birthing
from Within.
36 weeks:
We will do a "home visit." At this visit we would like all those who plan to attend your birth be present (if at all possible) and go over specific wishes for your birth: dad to catch, photos, cord cut, water birth, music, etc.
37-41 weeks:
We see you now every week until you have your baby. We may give you certain herbs or homeopathics that may help you get "ready".
41-42 weeks:
We might see you every couple of days and really work with natural methods to get you into labor if you have not had your baby. We might send you for a biophysical profile at the hospital, though this is rare.
Your Birth:
Jeni will attend your birth. She will bring
all of our equipment to your home and set up wherever you choose. She
will then stay with you through your entire birth and at least two
hours after you have your baby.
After you have your baby:
We
see you at 24 hrs, 72 hrs, 1 week, 2-3 week, and 6-8 weeks at the minimum.
We may even see you more often depending on how you and your baby are
doing. All of the postpartum visits, as we call them, are performed
at your home except the last one. We will take your blood pressure
and pulse, temperature, see how your uterus and perineum are recovering,
ask questions about your diet and how you are doing, and help you with
any issues with breastfeeding. We will weigh your baby, take all of
his/her vital signs, assess for jaundice and any signs of maladjustment.
These visits take about an hour and give you plenty of time to have
all of your needs met and questions asked.
And beyond:
Anytime you have a question you can always feel free to call us or stop by to say hello!
